July Update

Flash Fiction Fridays will resume next week. I apologize that I've been postponing FFF, but I've been buried in projects these past few weeks, and I'm finally able to see a light at the end of the tunnel. Aside from The Crossover Alliance Anthology which I am putting together, I also have The LZR Project, new cover designs, and some web design work I have been tinkering with.

With that being said, here's a quick update on what I've been working on lately and some of what you can expect in the coming weeks:

The LZR Project -
My short story mini-series, The LZR Project, is off and running. The LZR Project tells the story of how the Lazerblades (heroes from my Expired Reality series) partnered with the Enera government to capture the criminal mastermind, Mr. Big. A new digital episode in the series is released each and every Wednesday for only $1 per episode. A subscription is also available for $30 for those of you who want to pay once and receive an emailed download link each week. You can grab the first episode of the series for free too to see if it is something that interests you. Check out the official web page for more info.

New Covers And Reformatted Digital Files -
In the coming weeks I will be pushing out newly formatted digital files of all my books. Changes made to these files include various spelling and typo corrections, and a linked table of contents for each book to make them easier to navigate on your electronic reading device.

Along with the newly formatted files, I also have brand spanking new cover designs for all books in my Expired Reality series - Endangered Memories, Lost Birth, and Drather's Story (currently titled Picture Perfect). In case you missed it, here's a sneak peek at the general layout of Endangered Memories' new cover. This is not the final version, but will give you an idea of the direction I am moving in -

The Crossover Alliance -
The Crossover Alliance is a website/community for readers and writers of edgy Christian speculative fiction (the genre I write in). Originally started as a social network of sorts, I have since transferred the Alliance to a static website - www.thecrossoveralliance.com - and am in the process of building out a forum which will go live this coming week. The website will soon feature a showcase of various works that fall within this genre from many different authors. If you would like your work featured in the Showcase, drop me a line (dna (at) davidnalderman.com) and show me what you've got.

In the next month or so The Crossover Alliance Anthology will be showing its face. The Anthology is a collection of various short stories from authors who specialize in edgy Christian speculative fiction. I am especially excited about this project because I've read each of the stories that will be included in this project and...wow...that's all I can say. You'll be blown away, I guarantee it!

Email Newsletter -
In case you didn't know, I have an email newsletter I try to put out each month or so. In it I detail the various projects I am working on. If you'd like to sign up, please head to http://eepurl.com/vBIZT and drop me your email address.

The LZR Project Series Subscription Now Available!

So, after tinkering with Gumroad (the site on which I host The LZR Project), I have finally figured out a way to offer up a subscription system for my short story series.

I was originally going to take advantage of Gumroad's actual subscription system, but they don't offer weekly subscriptions -  only monthly, tri-monthly, and yearly. I tried to put together a yearly subscription, but those who subscribe in the middle of the year would not have access to older episodes because of the way the system is set up. I contacted support, and they gave me a great workaround. Now you can pay one fee ($30), have access to all back episodes of The LZR Project, and be emailed with a download link when each subsequent episode comes out. There will be 40 episodes in all, and a new one will be released each and every Wednesday until the series comes to an end.

Here is the link to the subscription page for those interested in this subscription option - https://gumroad.com/products/LqzG

You can still grab each episode individually, if you choose to do so, through this link - http://www.davidnalderman.com/#!the-lzr-project/c1npk

Flash Fiction Friday #21 - Roaming V

Roaming V
A purple silhouette in the shape of the female form. Flat, without any identifying details, much like a blank cardboard cutout. That was all the woman was to Dellaray, even though it was known that the woman was so much more than a mere cutout or silhouette. She was a hologram. She was an A.I. – Artificial Intelligence – although the ‘Artificial’ part wasn’t as true as it once was. Verspe was more than a computer program, more than a robot. She had gained an awareness. She had gained a spirit, although Dellaray knew not of how she had accomplished such a feat.

“Your blood pressure is rising,” Verspe stated in her usual monotone female voice. “As a result, your breathing has increased, and your perspiration levels have risen dramatically.”

I move the thick stick into the makeshift campfire, stoking the flame in hopes of keeping the heat in our cave until morning. The downpour outside the mouth of our dwelling space threatens to flood us out if the water level reaches the cave entrance which is three feet above the ground level of the forest. The rainwater was at nearly two feet when I last checked a half hour ago.

I have never seen it rain so much before.

Verspe moves her glowing projection close to the fire. Her figure fades in and out depending on what angle I look at her from. The firelight is doing a good job of washing her out. I know she is a mere hologram, but sometimes she personifies a human being better than some friends I have.

“You are worried of the rainwater,” Verspe says.

I stoke the fire some more before setting my stick on the ground and pulling the front of my thick denim coat shut to seal out the cold wind that is sneaking its way into our space. “Yes.”

“At this rate, the rainwater will begin to flood the cave in approximately - ”

I wave my hand at her to shut her up. “Zip it, robot girl. Okay? I have enough on my mind right now, I don’t need your depressing statistics. Just...just let me rest for a bit.”

“You would rather die in your sleep?”

“It’s the best way to go,” I whisper as I stare into the fire. “You don’t have to worry about death though, do you? You’re some fucked up artificial intelligence that isn’t really even here.”

“I am here. I am just not embodied in a form that you approve of.”

“Tell me, robot girl, is there anything we can do about the rainwater? Is there higher shelter somewhere?”

“There is, but it is unwise to pursue it.”

“Why is that? The wind is cold, but I can deal with it if the shelter isn’t far from here.”

“Sarppers.”

I shudder at the name. “You never told me there were Sarppers close by.”

“You never asked.”

“You shit-for-brains!” I stand to my feet and kick dirt into the fire. A few moments later, the source of my warmth is put out, but the glowing purple freak next to me is not. “Extinguish yourself or go dark or whatever the hell you do when you turn yourself off.”

“I cannot turn myself off. It is against my programming. The Anaishan Sentry Unified Sector does not allow a Roaming V to shut down. Ever. I must monitor your health and well-being until you are safely in the custody of the proper authorities.”

“Monitoring my health and well-being is much different than doing something to protect my health and well-being. If I had known Sarppers were nearby, I wouldn’t have picked this cave.”

“They are twenty yards to the west. It is very possible they know nothing of your presence here.”

“That’s reassuring.”

The rain stops. The wind stops. I draw near to the mouth of the cave and look out into the thick forest beyond. All I can make out is a massive turtle shell the size of a one-story house. The shell glows red, which tells me that my time is already up. I won’t have the opportunity to run, to hide, to flee.

“You have received your death sentence, Dellaray Realia,” Verspe says. I have a few moments to realize what has happened, that Verspe led me out here to execute me. Nobody will ever know that’s why I was led out here. I thought she was leading me to civilization so that I could be tried by a civil court. Instead, I realize I have been led into a trap meant to execute me in the vilest way without the Anaishan Sentry Unified Sector causing a public outcry.

Warmth fills my britches as I lose control of my bowels. It has begun. My nose suddenly bleeds, and my head feels like a stone is inflating within my tiny skull. Before everything blacks out, I hear the pulsing groan emanating from the turtle shell, a sound that I should have been prepared for. And then all at once, I collapse unto death.

The LZR Project Release Date!

On Wednesday, June 18th, the very first episode of The LZR Project will be released in digital format. Episode #0 will be available through Gumroad, and will be made FREE to introduce everyone to the series. From there on, a new episode (40 in all) of The LZR Project will be available each Wednesday for a price of $1. Episodes will be available in PDF format so they can be read on nearly any digital device.

The LZR Project takes place long after my Black Earth series and shortly before my Expired Reality series, and tells the story of how the Lazerblades - David Corbin, Carrie Green, Veronica Amorou, Sean Amorou - and a unit of the Enera government came together to pursue and capture the known criminal, Mr. Big.

NaNoWriMo Victory!

I just crossed the 50,000 word count finish line in my NaNoWriMo novel, The LZR Project! This was my ninth year participating in NaNoWriMo, and this was my ninth year winning it. But even though NaNo is over for me this November, it doesn't mean the manuscript I was drafting is anywhere near done. I cranked out a ton of episodes in the short story series, and a  lot of the story arcs are coming together nicely. Some of the story lines that were started in the Black Earth series are popping up to offer answers to questions many of my readers asked after ending the series, which is a great thing. This series seems to be turning into a bridge of some sort between the Black Earth series and the Expired Reality series, so it will be a perfect introduction for those who haven't had a chance to check out my Expired Reality series yet.

The LZR Project - Cover Peek

Here is the cover design I have been working on for The LZR Project. I was originally going to do a different color scheme for each episode, but I've decided to keep this same design for all covers and just change the episode number on them.

And in case you missed my blog post yesterday, here's a little tentative info about The LZR Project...

The first episode (Episode #0) will be released Tuesday, March 4th as a digital download. I am considering using Gumroad for the release of each of my episodes, but I'm not certain about that yet. I'd imagine the price for each episode will be around $1, and episodes will probably be released on a weekly basis, possibly every Tuesday. Once all episodes have been released, I'll turn around and publish the entire series in paperback format. Also, originally I wanted to take episodes down after they were up for a couple weeks to force people to purchase the paperback at the end if they wanted to catch up, and I think I'm going to scratch that idea and keep the previous episodes up as new ones are released so anyone can catch up at anytime.
